A young guy on my crew said mortar color doesn't matter if the wall gets painted, and I about dropped my trowel

My buddy Rick got a brick job in 2019 where the guy swore gray mortar would look fine under the paint. Two summers later the paint started bubbling up and you could see every joint through it, looked like a checkerboard. He had to chip the whole face back and redo it, and the homeowner was NOT happy.
