Why I stopped dumping money into premium dog food

I fed my lab a $90 bag of grain-free kibble for 8 months because every forum said it was the best. Then my vet asked me flat out what the ingredient list actually changed for him. I checked, and the first 5 ingredients were basically the same as the mid-tier brand I used before. Switched to a $50 bag with the vet's approval and his coat and energy stayed identical. Anybody else discover they were paying for marketing instead of results?

Bought a $120 "prescription" shampoo for my husky because the breeder swore by it. Turns out the main ingredient was basically oatmeal, same as the $8 bottle at the grocery store. Dog smelled identical, fur felt identical, and I felt like a complete sucker walking out of that pet store with my receipt. Now I just check the label for anything with more than five ingredients I can't pronounce and call it a day.
