The brand of sneakers I swore by for a decade was the wrong fit all along

I wore the same running shoe brand since high school, bought six pairs over the years because my first pair felt great. Last month I did a 10k in Portland and my left foot went numb around mile 4. A guy at the race expo watched me walk and pointed out my foot was sliding forward, said my arch type needed a wider toe box. I laughed it off, but then I tried on a different brand at the store and the difference was night and day. My toes actually spread out, no more squeezing, and the heel lock felt solid. I realized I stuck with that old brand out of habit, not because it worked for me. Now I'm wondering how many other things I've kept just because I got used to them, not because they're good. Anyone else discover their go-to brand was wrong after years of wearing it?
