Shoutout to the guy at Home Depot who saved me $60 on paint thinner

So I was standing in the paint aisle at the Home Depot in Lincoln three days ago, trying to decide between two cans of mineral spirits. This older guy stocking shelves just looked at me and said 'that expensive one is the same stuff as the generic, just different label.' I figured it was a trick to upsell me, but I grabbed the cheap one anyway. Used it on my brushes last night and it worked perfectly, no residue or anything. Why do people pay double for the name brand when the cheap stuff does the same job? Has anyone else caught a store employee giving out honest brand advice like that?

Wait, has anyone else had a hardware store employee straight up tell you the generic is the exact same formula? I see it a lot with paint too but never with chemicals like mineral spirits. Was he wearing an orange apron or just a random stock guy? I feel like if he was a paint department employee he probably gets asked that question ten times a day and finally snapped lol. That kind of honest advice is rare though and I bet the store hates it.

Honestly @zarar67, that kind of honesty is gold. Good for him.
