Question about the new 'subscription' model for my old Craftsman ratchet set

Three years ago I bought a set that came with a lifetime warranty at the local hardware store, but last week they told me the replacement program now requires a yearly fee, which feels like a betrayal of the original promise.

My 10-year-old Craftsman socket set warranty got the same treatment last month. It really does feel like they're going back on their word.
