My brother-in-law from Chicago said he'd rather drive his old Ford into a lake than buy a Toyota, and it made me realize some of this is just inherited family beef.

He wasn't even talking about features or reliability, just that his granddad had a bad experience with a dealership in 1982, and now no one in their family will even consider the brand, which seems like a pretty common way these loyalties actually work.

Man, that is so true. These family grudges against car brands run deep for no real reason. Good on your brother-in-law for at least knowing where his nonsense came from.

Look at it from the family's side though. That bad experience cost them real money and trust, so the grudge makes total sense. You don't just forget that stuff because a new model gets good reviews.

Took my dad to test drive a few trucks after he swore off Chevys for life. Let him drive a Silverado last, didn't tell him the brand until after. He liked it so much he bought one the next week. Sometimes you just have to get them behind the wheel to break that old story.
