My $8 flip phone case saved me from a $250 screen disaster
I've always been a fanboy for those fancy rugged phone cases, the ones that cost like 60 bucks and look like they survived a war. Last month I'm at a bus stop in Chicago, it's raining, my hands are full with groceries and a coffee, and boom, my phone slips out and lands face down on the curb. I pick it up expecting a cracked mess, but this cheap rubber case I got on clearance at a dollar store just bounced with it. The screen was fine, not even a scratch. Now I'm wondering if all that money people throw at brand-name cases is just for looks, or if I got insanely lucky. Anyone else have a random off-brand item save them while their 'premium' stuff failed them before?

Remember that drop angle matters way more than case price, so you might've just gotten lucky with how it hit. I've seen cheap cases crumble on a simple waist-high drop while my buddy's bulky brand-name one held up fine on worse falls. The real test is repeated drops, so give it a few months before you crown that dollar store case king.
