My 12-year-old Makita drill finally gave up the ghost last weekend.

I was hanging a shelf when the chuck just locked up for good. Makes you wonder if the newer models from any brand are built to last like that anymore.

It's the planned obsolescence you see everywhere now. My old fridge ran for twenty-five years, but the new one needed a repair after five. They just don't build things with the same heavy-duty parts, aiming for you to replace them sooner.

Got a point but it's more about cheaper materials now.

My parents' old washing machine lasted forever. When it finally died, we bought a new one and the drum cracked in three years. We found a local repair guy who fixed it with a better part than the original. It's been running strong for six years since then. Finding someone who uses good replacement parts makes all the difference.
