I finally visited a car dealership and saw why people stick with Toyota

I went to a Toyota dealership last Saturday with my brother who's looking for a used Camry. The salesman was super low pressure, just handed us the keys and said take your time. We test drove a 2018 model with 60k miles and it felt solid as a rock, no rattles or anything weird. My brother has a friend with a 2007 Corolla that's still going at 220k miles with just oil changes and brakes. I guess that's why people stay loyal even when other brands offer more flashy stuff. Has anyone else experienced that kind of reliability that just makes you not want to switch?

My 2015 Camry hit 180k miles before I sold it and the guy who bought it texted me last week it still runs perfect.

I read a Consumer Reports study last year that said Toyota and Lexus had the fewest problems per 100 vehicles over a ten year period. That kind of track record is hard to argue with when you are dropping twenty grand on a used car. It sounds like your brother is making a smart choice if he wants something that will last.

You mention that Consumer Reports study, and it reminds me of something I heard from a mechanic friend a few years back. He told me that Toyota and Lexus are the only brands where he sees cars with 200,000 miles come in for just basic oil changes and brake pads. He said most other brands start having transmission or engine issues long before that. A friend of mine had a 2010 Camry that she drove until 2023 with nothing but regular maintenance. It finally needed a new alternator but the engine was still running like a top. So yeah, I think your brother is making a very sound investment in a used car.
