I finally figured out why my Keurig coffee tasted like burnt plastic for months

Turns out the descaling process needs vinegar, not just water flushes, and I was too stubborn to read the manual until my buddy in Chicago showed me his 3-step cleaning trick. Has anyone else had a brand fail because their maintenance instructions were buried too deep?

My buddy actually warned me about using straight vinegar - it can mess up the rubber seals over time if you do it too often. Most manuals say to use a descaling solution or a 1:1 water to vinegar ratio, not just straight vinegar like some people think.

Right, and @jadew63 is totally right about the vinegar thing because I actually ruined a cheap coffee maker once by just dumping white vinegar straight in and letting it sit overnight. I mean, that's on me for trying to skip the manual too, I guess my brain just sees "clean" and thinks "strong acid will do the job faster." The rubber seal got all weird and started leaking after a few weeks, like a slow drip that just made a mess everywhere. Now I just buy the official descaling packets and follow the instructions exactly, even if it takes an extra rinse cycle or two.
