I dropped $500 on a 'professional' brand of climbing rope that frayed after just 6 months, while my buddy's cheaper one is still solid.

So is this a case of paying for the name and getting burned, or did I just get a bad batch, and what's a brand you'd actually trust with your life on a wall?

Honestly, you probably just got super unlucky with a bad rope. Those top brands have crazy high standards for a reason.

Well, even the best brands have a bad batch sometimes.

Wait, are we really acting like a frayed rope after 6 months is some kind of life or death crisis? I mean yeah, it sucks to drop that kind of cash on gear that flakes out, but climbing ropes get banged up pretty quick depending on how often you use em and what kinda rock you're on. My buddy had a similar thing with a Petzl rope that started showing wear way too fast, but he just kept climbing on it for another year with no issues. Sometimes I wonder if people get a little too dramatic about gear failing when it's really just normal wear and tear.
