Why does nobody talk about how much better subtitles make action movies?
I watched Fury Road with subs on last week cause my neighbor was mowing and I couldn't hear crap. Ended up keeping them on the whole movie and noticed so many little sounds and lines I always missed. Guns reloading, engines shifting, that weird grunt the war boys make. Now I can't watch action flicks without them. Anyone else have a movie that totally changed after turning subs on?

Subs make a huge difference for action scenes where the sound design gets lost in the noise. The war boy grunts alone are worth turning them on.

That actually makes me think about the sound mixers who had to figure out how to keep those grunts and engine roars clean while the explosions were going off. I've worked on construction sites with chainsaws and heavy equipment, and it's a nightmare trying to hear someone shout a warning over all that noise. So when a movie like Fury Road gets that balance right, it's not just good filmmaking, it's genuinely impressive technical work. Subtitles are a cheat code for catching all the little sounds that the mixers intentionally placed but that get swallowed up in a loud theater or a cheap soundbar.
