That "fix" for my apartment door hinge only lasted 48 hours
I read online that WD-40 fixes a squeaky hinge, but my door started sticking within two days. Turns out the latch was misaligned, I had to shim it with a beer can tab. Has anyone else found a quick fix that made things worse before the real fix?
The beer can tab trick is a classic, but the real problem is usually the strike plate. WD-40 just masks the squeak, it does nothing for alignment. Ended up drilling out the screw holes and using wood glue with toothpicks to get a solid anchor. That held for months until I finally replaced the whole latch assembly. Shims are temporary, wood filler is the real fix.
