The snake plant hate got to me for years, but I finally saw the light

I used to avoid snake plants like the plague. Everyone always said they were boring and ugly, so I stuck with ferns and calatheas for about 4 years. Then my friend Sarah gave me a grown one from her office last March, and I stuck it in a dark corner of my bathroom just to be nice. Three months went by and I forgot to water it twice, but it put out three new pups and looked perfect. That's when I realized I was ignoring a plant that literally thrives on neglect while killing my finicky ones with love. Anyone else finally give a snake plant a real chance after avoiding it forever?

Had a coworker who swore snake plants were basic and overrated. She bought a fancy rare philodendron that died in two weeks. Then her mom gave her a sad looking snake plant from a garage sale. She shoved it behind her desk and forgot about it for like six months. When they did the office plant census last spring she found it had grown almost a foot taller and was pushing out babies like crazy. She never admitted it but she started buying more snake plants after that.

That "basic and overrated" comment really gets me. I read somewhere that snake plants are actually one of the top plants for purifying indoor air, which just adds to their appeal. @jones.anna's story about the office plant census is exactly the kind of thing that makes me laugh now because it's so true. I used to feel guilty for not giving my plants constant attention but snake plants taught me that sometimes doing less is better. They really do thrive on that whole "set it and forget it" approach, which feels like a cheat code for people like me who travel a lot.

@jones.anna's story is cute but it's just a plant, not a redemption arc or anything deep.

Man, I put one in a closet by accident and it did better than anything on my windowsill.
