So I tried the 'ice cube watering' trick for my orchids and it completely backfired on me.

Everyone in my local plant group swears by it, says it prevents overwatering. I gave it a shot with my phalaenopsis, using three cubes a week like they said. After about a month, the leaves started getting these mushy, dark spots and the roots looked sad. My friend who works at the greenhouse in Tampa said the cold shock was probably stressing the plant and the slow melt wasn't even getting the medium properly wet. I had to repot it and lost two blooms. What other 'easy' plant hacks have actually caused problems for you guys?

Stopped the ice cubes, just water mine normally now and it's doing great.

My neighbor tried that coffee grounds trick for her roses and it just made a weird crust. I'm with @the_tyler on sticking to the basics, most shortcuts seem to cause more trouble.
