Overheard a woman at the nursery say she only buys plants that are "almost dead"

Was at the garden center last Saturday grabbing soil. This older lady was picking through the clearance rack. She told her friend she waits until plants look totally wrecked. Then she buys them for 75% off and nurses them back. I watched her grab a crispy fern with like two green fronds left. She said most people give up too soon and that's how she got a 6 foot fiddle leaf for $8. Has anyone else tried this approach? Seems risky but the savings are wild.

My wife says the same thing about me, except I never bounce back.

Isn't it true like @juliag10 said that most things worth saving just need a second look?

Haven't you seen that old gardening trick on YouTube where people fix half dead orchids with just ice cubes and a prayer? I read a blog post once from a lady who called herself the "Plant Reaper" and she did this exact thing. She said the key is checking the roots are still white or firm, not mushy, and that most plants bounce back if you cut off the dead stuff and repot them immediately. The clearance rack at my local nursery usually has some sad looking ferns and succulents that just need water and a better spot in the house. I tried it once with a droopy snake plant that looked like it got stepped on, cost me like three bucks, and after a month under a grow light it had four new shoots. You have to be patient and not get attached right away though, because sometimes they really are just done for.
