Overheard a gardener at the Portland nursery say talking to plants is a waste of time

I was picking up some potting soil last week and heard this older guy tell his friend that all the talk about chatting with your plants is nonsense. He said, 'Plants don't have ears, they have roots. Focus on the soil, not the sound.' It really got me thinking because I always figured it couldn't hurt. But he had a point. I went home and checked the pH of my fiddle leaf fig's dirt instead of just telling it to grow. It was way off. Fixed that, and in three days I saw a new leaf starting. Maybe the connection isn't about words, but about paying closer attention to what they actually need. Has anyone else switched from talking to more hands-on checking?

You managed to kill a cactus @kai_butler83? That's actually impressive in a messed up way lol. Shows how easy it is to love a plant to death even when you're trying to help.

My monstera was looking sad for months and I kept telling it to perk up. Finally got a moisture meter for like ten bucks. Turns out I was drowning the poor thing. Let it dry out completely between waterings now, and it pushed out two huge split leaves last month. That silent check told me more than any pep talk ever did.
