Ficus can be picky, but usually they just need more light and less water than people think. Overwatering is what kills most of them.

Did your friend actually manage to save their ficus after that? One of my buddies had the same problem, he was watering his ficus like every other day because the soil looked dry on top. Turns out it was still wet an inch down and the roots started rotting. He finally got it out of the pot, trimmed all the mushy roots, and repotted it in a smaller container with better drainage. It took a few months but that thing bounced back with new leaves, pretty wild how tough they can be if you catch it early.

Overwatering is what kills most of them" - yeah that was my problem too. I was drowning my poor plants for months. Dialed it way back and now they're actually doing alright.
