My neighbor called tropical pitcher plants 'weird weeds' and it got me thinking
I was watering my front porch plants yesterday and my neighbor walked by and pointed at my Nepenthes hanging basket and called it a weird weed. Said it looked like something that belongs in a swamp not on a nice porch. I just laughed it off but inside I was kind of annoyed. These plants have been part of my collection for about 4 years now and they are anything but weeds. They trap bugs in their pitchers and digest them which is amazing to watch. I think people see something unusual and just assume it's ugly or out of place. But to me that's the whole point of growing them. They show how creative nature can be. Has anyone else had a non plant person trash talk their favorite weird species?

Well, I mean, a neighbor who calls a pitcher plant a weird weed probably also thinks lawns are the peak of gardening. Sounds like you let a comment from someone who clearly doesn't know plants get under your skin a bit. If the plant makes you happy, who cares what they think about it?
