My neighbor called my raised bed soil mix 'basically mud' last spring
He pointed out I was using way too much peat moss and not enough perlite for drainage, which explained why my carrots were so stunted. I switched to a 60/40 mix of compost and coarse sand with a little perlite this year, and the difference is huge. Has anyone else had a simple soil tip completely fix a problem plant?

Same with my tomatoes and vermiculite.

Seriously, it's just dirt and tomatoes. How much of a difference can one bag of sparkly rocks really make? My grandpa grew the best tomatoes I ever had in plain old backyard soil. Are we all just overthinking this now?

My neighbor @michael_burns swears by vermiculite for his tomatoes too, says it makes a huge difference.
