A talk with my friend Mark at the Denver Botanical Gardens changed my mind about houseplants

We were looking at the orchid display and he said, 'I think the whole 'plant parent' thing is overblown, they're just nice decorations.' I've always felt a real connection to my plants, so that hit me hard. It made me question if I was putting too much feeling into something that doesn't feel back. Has anyone else had a friend say something that made you rethink your hobby?

Mark's take is pretty cold. My plants are more than decor, they're little quiet friends that change with the seasons. Caring for them is a small, real thing in a busy world.

What's wrong with just liking decor?

Remembered my plants are for me, not for other people's opinions.

Totally get that. A coworker once called my collection "expensive dust catchers" and I was weirdly offended for days. They're not just stuff, they're a quiet little project.
