A guy at the Austin plant sale told me he only buys plants with ugly leaves because nobody else wants them
He said the clearance rack at his local nursery is where he finds the stuff nobody propagates anymore, and it made me realize I've never once looked at that shelf.
The clearance rack at my local nursery is basically where my whole houseplant collection started, and I mean the sad wilted ones nobody else would touch. I've got a rubber plant I paid three bucks for that was down to two leaves, and now it's taller than my bookshelf. People walk right past those shelves because they want the pretty one that's already perfect, but half the fun is bringing something back from the brink and watching it come alive again. That guy at the Austin sale gets it, those ugly leaf plants usually just need a little care and they turn into something nobody can find at the fancy stores anymore. It kind of stings to think about all the cool old plants that get tossed because they aren't picture perfect for Instagram. Next time I'm at the nursery I'm heading straight for the back corner first.
