Wasted $50 on a cheap bone folder that left scuff marks on every page
Picked up a plastic one from an online craft store and it scratched up my first three book covers before I realized the edge wasn't smoothed down, anyone else had a tool that just ruined your materials right out of the package?

Honestly @the_jenny nailed it, sounds like you paid for the joy of being their free sanding department lol. I get that budget tools are tempting but sometimes you end up spending more time fixing them than actually making stuff. At least now you know to run your finger along the edge before you buy next time.

Got that classic "factory seconds" special, paid full price for the privilege of sanding my own tools down.

Wait, you paid full price for tools that already had obvious flaws? That is absolutely insane to me (and I don't use that word lightly). I mean, factory seconds are supposed to be the budget option, not some kind of "premium sanding experience" or whatever. The fact that they didn't mark them down even a little is just shady business practice, plain and simple. You basically paid extra to do their quality control work for them, which is just backwards. I'd be marching back to that store with both tools in hand, asking for a manager and a refund, not gonna lie.
