Stop casing your books in that cheap plastic wrap, it cracks in a year
I keep seeing people on here binding their first hardcovers and wrapping the boards in that clear adhesive plastic film you can buy at any office store. I get it, it looks shiny and it's cheap. But that stuff is not book cloth and it will not hold up, I promise you. I rebound a copy of my grandfather's 1978 atlas in that exact plastic three years ago, and last month I pulled it off the shelf to find the corners lifting and spiderweb cracks all along the spine. Real book cloth breathes and flexes with the boards, that plastic just sits there and fights every time you open the cover. The worst part is when it starts to shrink in the cold, because then it pulls the board and you get a warp you can't fix. I switched to a plain linen cloth from a supplier in Chicago and the difference is not even close, it moves with the book instead of against it. What are you all using for your case wraps, and has anyone found a plastic that actually survives more than two winters?
