Spent $80 on a guillotine paper cutter and it's been a pain ever since

Bought one of those big Dahle cutters off Amazon thinking it would save me time trimming book blocks... but the blade started catching after like 20 cuts. Took it apart and the alignment was just way off from the factory. Anyone else have luck fixing these things or should I just go back to a straight edge and a knife?

and honestly that Dahle alignment issue is pretty common, I've fixed two of them by just loosening the bolts on the blade carriage and shifting it over a millimeter or two before tightening back down. If you can get the blade tracking straight it'll cut clean for ages, but the factory setup is hit or miss depending on who assembled it. worth a shot before you toss it, worst case you're back to the straight edge anyway.

Is it just me or is the whole "buy once cry once" thing kind of a myth these days? You pay more thinking you're getting quality and instead you're just paying more for the same cheap junk with a fancier box. I've seen this with tools, kitchen stuff, even clothes. Something that used to be simple and reliable now has to have all these extra features they mess up. Maybe the old straight edge method was actually the better way.

Huh, I see it a little different actually. @walker.max, I get the frustration but I've had pretty good luck with some of my higher end paint sprayers and roller frames. The cheap ones clog and break after one job, but my Graco stuff has lasted years. Idk, maybe you just gotta be picky about which brands actually still care about quality instead of just raising prices.
