PSA: I was pressing my signatures with the grain running the wrong way for 14 months
Sat down last Tuesday to fold a batch of 16 signatures for a rebind and a crease cracked right down the middle of the first page. Grabbed my bone folder and tried again, same split, and that is when it hit me I had been folding against the grain on every single book since I started keeping track in my notebook. Pulled a sheet from the scrap pile in my basement shop here in Dayton and ran my thumb along the edge to feel it, and sure enough the fibers go the other way than I thought. Cut the next batch so the grain runs with the spine fold and got 16 clean creases with no tearing. Anyone else learn this the hard way or did someone teach you to check grain direction before your first fold?
Guess the fibers were trying to tell you something for 14 months and you just weren't listening. Welcome to the club of people who learn grain direction the hard way, we meet on Tuesdays right after you waste a batch of paper. At least now you've got a foolproof test, just hope the next lesson doesn't cost you another year.
