One critique on my thread tension changed my whole process

Last month at the Austin craft fair, a customer pointed out that my Coptic stitch covers were wavy near the spine. She said it looked like the thread was too loose, and honestly I thought it was just the paper shifting. I went back and started pulling each stitch tighter, 25% more than I used to, and now the spines lay flat every time. Has anyone else had a stranger point out a flaw you couldn't see yourself?
