Finally figured out why my headbands kept slipping off while binding
Turns out I was cutting my book cloth grain wrong for like 2 years and it was warping everything. Caught it when a friend pointed out my spine was pulling to the left on a 300 page restoration job. Anyone else had grain direction mess up their projects without realizing it?

The slipping thing you described sounds more like a lining issue than a grain problem honestly. If your headbands were actually sliding off, that usually means the glue tacked off too fast or you didn't roughen the spine enough before applying them. Grain direction will mess up your covers and cause warping like you said, but it doesn't usually make headbands physically slip loose unless the cloth is pulling the board out of shape. Double check that your paste isn't drying before you get the headband seated, that's a common fix. You might also be cutting the headband strip itself on the wrong bias if it's moving around.

Grain direction gives me enough headaches without my headbands joining the mutiny.
