Warning: That book club vote app wrecked our February meeting

We used one of those ranking apps to pick our next read. Five people voted for a 900 page history book about grain trade. Another four picked a short thriller. The app averaged the scores and we ended up with some middle ground nobody wanted. I spent the whole drive home wondering why we didn't just talk it out like adults. Has anyone else had a voting system backfire on your group?
