Vent: My book club picked a literary prize winner that fell flat for everyone.

I pushed for The Testaments because I loved The Handmaid's Tale, but the whole group was bored by chapter three and the debate about sequels ruined our entire meeting at Sarah's place last Thursday; has anyone else had a book win awards but bomb with your actual club?

My book club tried The Goldfinch a few years back because it won the Pulitzer and everyone was talking about it. I got about 150 pages in and just couldn't care less about that kid and his painting problems. Three of us finished it and we spent the whole meeting arguing about whether the ending was satisfying or just a mess. We actually passed a notebook around to rank how much we hated it, which was more fun than the book itself.

Did you read that piece in the Times about prize books and reader fatigue?
