Update: I used to think picking the next book was just about finding a good read
For years in my club, we'd just vote on a list of popular titles. Last month, our new member Sarah suggested we pick a book set in the city we're meeting in, which is Chicago. We read 'The Devil in the White City' and the discussion was way deeper because we could all picture the places. Now I push for books with a strong local or personal hook to our group. What's a location-based pick that worked for your club?

Try a book set in your hometown.

Oh that's a great idea, @jenny_coleman. I read a mystery novel last year that was set right in my old neighborhood. It was so weird recognizing street names and parks, made the whole story feel way more real.

Totally get that, local settings make a book club click. My group in Portland read "Wild" and arguing about the actual Pacific Crest Trail sections was way more personal. Maybe find a novel about a famous local event, even if it's fiction?
