Unpopular opinion: I spent $40 on a fancy annotated edition for our book club and it was a total waste
The footnotes were just the author's grocery lists and random thoughts, and our whole group argued for an hour about whether that was 'deep' or just lazy. Has anyone else been tricked by a special edition that added nothing?

Feel your pain. I once bought a "director's cut" DVD that was just the regular movie with worse sound. That hour-long argument sounds like the most interesting part of your book club meeting.

That director's cut scam is the worst, @the_kevin. I had a "special edition" blu-ray that just added a five minute making-of featurette from YouTube. Our book club fight was basically over whether the main character was brave or just stupid, and it got way too personal. I'm pretty sure two people aren't speaking now.

My copy of the "remastered" Alien had three minutes of new footage, total. Those special editions are just a cash grab. Your book club fight, @xena_fox39, sounds like it hit a real nerve. Arguing about a character's choices can feel like arguing about a real person's life. It gets heated because everyone sees a bit of themselves in the story. No wonder those two took it so personally.
