TIL our book club spent 4 meetings fighting over a book half of us never finished
Back in January our club in Tacoma picked a 600 page novel and the discussion kept stalling for 40 minutes every time because two members were quoting the ending and everyone else was lost. It turned out six of the eleven of us had only read the first 100 pages, and nobody wanted to admit it until one guy finally spoke up at meeting four. Should we start doing a quick show of hands on who actually finished before we open the floor?
Our club started doing a quick round at the top where each person just says "done" or "halfway" or "didn't get there." Took thirty seconds and saved us so much grief. Last month we read a 500 pager and only four people finished, so we just talked about the first half for the meeting and pushed the ending to next time. The two who finished got to tease everyone a little but nobody felt ambushed. Saved the whole night honestly.
