TIL my book club in Denver hated my discussion questions

One member flat out said 'these feel like a high school quiz, not a real conversation', so I switched to asking about character choices we'd make instead. Anyone else get feedback that shifted how you run your meetings?

Honestly, is a book club critique really that big of a deal? It's just people talking about a book, not a final exam. Maybe the person who said that just wanted to sound deep. Switching to asking about character choices is fine, but it's not some huge life lesson.

So what kind of questions were you asking before? Like "what color was the main character's shirt on page 47" type stuff, or were they just too basic? I'm trying to picture the exact line between a quiz and a real talk. Did anyone give you a good example of a question that would start a real conversation?

Wait, people actually ask about page 47?
