Three years ago my book club picked a thriller and half the members admitted they only read the Wikipedia summary.

I spent 4 hours prepping discussion questions for a book nobody actually read, and now I'm the one who gets called 'too intense' about the meetings. Has anyone else just given up on enforcing the homework?

Four hours of prep time that you chose to spend, nobody asked you to do that. If half the group didn't read the book, maybe the problem isn't them it's that the book was a dud. You could've just showed up and talked about the Wikipedia summary too like a normal person. Book clubs are supposed to be social and fun, not like a college seminar. Lighten up or find a group that matches your intensity.

Exactly. That's the thing people miss. You can still have a great time talking about a book you hated or barely skimmed, that's half the fun of it. Making it into homework just ruins the whole point of getting together.
