That biography about Elizabeth I I almost skipped turned out to be amazing

I was really skeptical of Alison Weir's book on Elizabeth I because I thought it would be too dry and academic. But another member in my Boston book club group said it reads like a novel, so I gave it a shot after dragging my feet for 2 months. Now I'm halfway through and I can't believe how much detail she packs in without making it boring. Has anyone else had good luck with historical biographies that surprised you?

Weir's Tudor books surprised me too, they're way more readable than I expected.

Started reading one of hers on vacation and ended up skipping the beach to finish it.
