Spent 8 months trying to get my book club to agree on a single non-fiction title

Finally got them to read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks after 8 months of debating, has anyone else had this much trouble picking a book that isn't a thriller?

Oh wait, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is actually more of a narrative non-fiction with thriller-like elements in the medical ethics parts. But yeah, getting a book club to agree on anything non-fiction is basically herding cats, isn't it?

Herding cats" is the perfect way to put it, honestly. But your comment made me wonder - do you think the issue is that non-fiction just doesn't have the same kind of "hook" that a thriller does, or is it more about how personal people get with their own knowledge? Like, when someone suggests a thriller, everyone's in the same boat of not knowing what's coming, but with non-fiction, someone always has a strong opinion on the topic already. Is it really the book's fault, or is it that we've all got too many different experiences to ever agree on something real?

@riverreed probably just volunteers to herd cats for fun, but yeah non-fiction book clubs are just arguments with snacks.
