Spent 2 hours trying to get my group to pick a book without fighting

We kept going in circles over whether to choose a classic or a new release. Anyone have a system that actually works for this?

Honestly, that sounds like my old book club before it fell apart. Did you guys try having everyone nominate one book each and then doing a quick vote? Tbh the real problem is usually one person digging their heels in.

Nah, sometimes it's just a bad mix of tastes.

We switched to a ranked voting system in my group after a similar blowup. Everyone lists their top three books and points get assigned, 3 for first pick, 2 for second, 1 for third. The book with the most overall points wins. It stopped the one-person-digs-in problem cold because even if your first pick doesn't win, your second or third might make the cut and you still feel heard. We also set a rule that nobody can complain about a pick they voted for, which cut the negativity way down. Did your group ever try something like a points system or was it just a straight up yes or no vote?
