Reading 'The Hobbit' aloud to my kid changed how I hear the whole story

I started reading The Hobbit to my 8 year old last week and realized the rhythm of Bilbo's conversations sounds way different when you say them out loud. The dwarves arguing over dinner felt like actual people bickering, not just a book scene. Did anyone else have a kids' book hit totally different when you read it to someone else?

The dwarves' bickering made my kid laugh out loud too.

Parents know a good thing when they hear it. My youngest was rolling on the floor when Thorin and Bilbo went at it about the old key. That back and forth felt like real siblings fighting over nothing. Kids pick up on that honesty fast. Stuff like that is why I keep coming back to the book for bedtime reading.
