Question about the $150 copy of 'Ulysses' I bought for book club

Honestly, I was so sure that the annotated hardcover edition would help me finally get through Joyce's book club pick last month. But after two weeks of struggling and forcing myself to read 50 pages, I gave up and switched to a free PDF online which I finished in a week. Has anyone else dropped serious cash on a book for your club and ended up regretting it?

I mean, I did that with Infinite Jest once and ended up just reading the wiki summary for like half the chapters. Maybe try reading along with a podcast or something next time, it helped me get through the dense parts without forcing it.

Built a whole shelf for Infinite Jest last year. Still haven't finished it.
