Our club picked 'The Overstory' over a thriller and it changed our whole vibe

Honestly, we had to choose between Richard Powers' big tree book and a popular detective novel for our March read. I pushed for 'The Overstory' even though it's over 500 pages. For the first two meetings, the talk was way deeper than usual, all about nature and time instead of just plot twists. Ngl, three members said they started noticing the trees in their own neighborhood differently. It was a risk picking the longer, slower book, but it paid off. Has your group ever taken a chance on a dense pick that really worked out?

Three members actually started seeing their local trees differently? That's a huge win for a book club. The Overstory must be doing some serious work on people. Sounds like your risk totally changed the game.

Honestly, I'm just glad my book club pick didn't make everyone hate me. Last time I suggested something, we read a 700 page book about whale oil. I'm still hearing about that one. So if this one just makes people look at a pine tree a little longer, I'll call it a total win. Low bar, but I'll take it. What did your club read last?
