Our book club spent 45 minutes arguing if a fictional dog was a metaphor
Last week at our meeting, we were talking about a book where a family has a golden retriever. Half the group was sure the dog was a symbol for lost innocence, and the other half just thought it was a dog. My friend Janet got so heated she said, "You're reading way too much into this, it's just a pet!" It got pretty silly when we started debating the dog's name. Has your club ever gotten stuck on a detail that might not mean anything?

Spent twenty minutes once arguing if a character's red hat was important. It was just a hat.

Maybe the hat wasn't important to the plot, but it could've been a huge deal for the costume designer trying to get the color just right!

My buddy and I once argued for an hour about a background character's shoelaces. We get way too deep into this stuff sometimes. I'm glad I'm not the only one who does it.
