Our book club compared two versions of the same novel and the old one won by a mile
We read the original 1960s version of a classic and then the updated 2000s edition with modern language. The old one had way more raw emotion and we spent 45 minutes arguing about it at our last meeting. Has anyone else had a book club debate over revised editions?

The old version just hits harder because it wasn't trying to be polite or accessible. Modern edits sand down all the sharp edges until the story feels flat. My book club spent a whole meeting on this too, people got legit heated about one word change that killed the whole tone of a scene.

Right? They sand down the LANGUAGE too. I remember one story where they changed "slunk into the room" to "walked quietly into the room." Completely killed the sneaky, guilty vibe of the character. Makes me wonder if editors even read the original or just run it through a sanitizer.
