My book club spent a whole meeting on one character's coffee order

Last Tuesday in Portland, we argued for 40 minutes whether the barista's snark in chapter 3 meant the author was mocking the main character or just lazy writing. It got so heated our moderator nearly quit, and now I'm stuck wondering if anyone else has had a debate derail over something this small?
