My book club hit 50 members last month and it completely changed how our discussions go.

I thought it would just mean more opinions, but now half the people haven't read the book and the talk always drifts off into personal stories, has anyone else seen this happen when a group gets too big?

Hate when that happens, it totally kills the vibe of the group.

Does it actually change the whole mood or just make people awkward for a minute?

Gotta disagree hard on this one. Awkwardness is part of what makes groups feel real and human, not some vibe killer. When someone says something weird or there's that split second of silence, it's actually a chance to bond over how silly we all are. The best inside jokes come from those moments where someone accidentally kills the mood and then everyone laughs about it later. Groups that are always perfectly smooth feel fake and rehearsed to me, like everyone's walking on eggshells. Let the awkward moments happen, they're way more memorable than another boring conversation anyway.
