I used to skip the author's notes until our book club read 'Project Hail Mary'

For years, I thought those sections were just filler. Our club read Andy Weir's book last month, and someone pointed out how the science in his notes shaped the whole story. I went back and read them, and it changed how I saw the main character's choices. Now I always check the notes first, because they often explain why the book feels a certain way. Has anyone else found a book where the extra material totally shifted your view?
