A book club member in Denver made me rethink how we pick our monthly reads

I was at a book club meeting last month at a coffee shop downtown, and one member brought up how she felt the last three picks were all similar - same genre, same tone. She said it felt like we were reading the same book over and over. So we tried a vote where each person had to suggest something totally different from the last pick, and it actually worked. Has anyone else had to shake up their club's process to keep things fresh?

Totally been there. We had this problem where our picks just drifted into the same sad literary fiction territory. A rotating theme system worked for us, like one month is sci-fi, next is a memoir, then something funny. Everyone gets to suggest a category at the start and we vote that way. Keeps the pile from getting stale.

Totally piggybacking off what @simons28 said, we tried that too but got lazy and just started doing "books that aren't our usual thing" months. First one was a romance novel for me and man did I get some weird looks carrying that around on the subway.
