Warning: I swapped out the old packing on a steam valve with a graphite set from the shop.
It was a small job on a boiler at the paper mill in town. I put it in, tightened it down like normal, and fired it back up. The leak stopped, but the valve got way too hot to touch after an hour. Turns out I packed it too tight and the extra friction made heat. I backed it off a quarter turn and it cooled right down. Anyone else run into this with graphite packing?

Ever think you had to crank graphite down super tight? I used to, until I cooked a valve just like that lol. Backing it off a bit is the move for sure.

Cooking a valve" is such a painful way to learn that lesson. I definitely felt that.

Oh man, I've been there too, it's the worst feeling when you realize what you did.
