Update: I stopped washing my tube rollers with solvent and the tube pull on a 60 foot stack in Gary got way easier
For about 7 years I cleaned my tube rollers with solvent after every shift because that is how the old guys showed me. Back in March I got lazy on a rush job and just wiped them down with a rag, and the next day the rollers grabbed the tube way better. I talked to a guy who has been rolling tubes for 25 years and he said solvent dries out the rubber and makes it slick. Now I only wipe them and swap them out sooner, and my reject rate on the last two jobs dropped to almost nothing. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just late to the party?
Read something on a tube rolling forum a while back about how solvent can pull the oils right out of the rubber. The guy was saying the same thing your 25 year guy said, that the rubber needs a little bite to grab. We switched to just wiping ours down with a dry rag last year and the difference was real. You are not late to the party, most guys just keep doing it the way they were taught and never question it.
