Two-pass root pass on 6-inch pipe split my crew's opinion in half
Last month in the shop I tried running a root pass with two separate passes instead of the usual single stringer on 6-inch schedule 40. First one looked like a dream with full fusion and no suck-back, but the second one washed out a spot near the 6 o'clock position and I had to grind it. My journeyman swears the dual pass is only for out-of-position work, while another guy says it saved him on a 12-inch rerack in Ohio. I learned it depends way more on gap size and heat control than I thought, but I'm not sold yet. Anyone else run a double root and see it work or fail on carbon steel?
